Licence renewal: a 7-hour supplementary training is part of renewing from 1 November 2026

To renew a taxi driver licence, you must complete a supplementary training of at least seven hours, and only once. You do not need it if you have completed the new 21-hour training. The transition during which a licence could be renewed without training was valid until 31 October 2026 at most.
Note: The training is given in Finnish. The exam for a first licence is held only in Finnish or Swedish (Traficom regulation, section 3), with no interpreter or dictionary allowed.
What the law says
The temporary Act 613/2026 added section 26 b to the Act on Transport Services. According to it, the driver must complete a supplementary training to renew the licence. The training lasts at least seven hours, and its content covers the same topics as the 21-hour training. A person who completes the training receives a training certificate.
You take the supplementary training only once for renewing the licence. If you have already completed the 21-hour taxi driver training, the supplementary training is not required. The Act is valid from 1 September 2026 until 31 August 2034.
The transitional provision allowed renewal without the supplementary training while training was not yet available, but only until 31 October 2026 at most.
What this means for you
- You can apply for renewal at the earliest six months before your licence expires. Check the expiry date on your licence and count the window from it.
- If your licence expires in the coming months, find out before you apply whether you already have a training certificate. Without it, renewal is not possible from the start of November.
- If you have completed the 21-hour training, you do not need this training.
- You apply for renewal from the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency, that is, Traficom.
